Sean Carlson, 29, left, and Jamie McGonnigal, 37, were married on a beach in Provincetown, Mass., on May 18, surrounded by family and friends. On May 17, 2004, Massachusetts became the first state to legalize same-sex marriage after the state's Supreme Court ruled in Goodridge v. Department of Public Health that Massachusetts could not prevent same-sex couples from marrying. Twelve states and the District of Columbia now allow gay couples to wed.
